Praise Him In The Storm

I remember back then when I was in the university, a friend of mine used to sing a song by Casting Crowns with the title ‘Praise You in This Storm’.

This song always remind me of the story of Paul and Silas in Acts 16 where they were attacked, beaten and thrown into the inner part of the jail (the dungeon) and their feet were fastened in the stocks.

Paul and Silas knew the importance of praising God in the storm. So in Act 16:25-26 (GNT), the bible says;

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a violent earthquake, which shook the prison to its foundations. At once all the doors opened, and the chains fell off all the prisoners.”

This has shown us that praising God is not limited to thanking him for what we have received, we can also praise God for what we are hoping for.

Paul and Silas were not praising God for keeping them in the prison but they knew the importance of praying and praising as a weapon to clam their storm.

When we praise God, he will work in ways we can not think of and then we call it a miracle ‘cos Gods ways are not are ways, his ways are miraculous in our sight.

It is important to note that Paul and Silas were not the only one to enjoy the benefit of their praises to God, all the other prisoners who were listening to them also enjoyed it as their chains fell off and their prison doors opened.

So have you been complaining about your neighbor who sings praises at night? Remember, the listeners in the story of Paul and Silas, they enjoyed same miracle as Paul and Silas did. If they had complained of what Paul and Silas were doing, they probably would have missed that opportunity to be free.
I will like to encourage someone today to cultivate the habit of praising God. No matter what you are going through, people might have told you that there is no hope, you might have been discouraged, down, beaten and broken but if you can engage the power of praise, I am confident that the same God who set Paul and Silas free will also set you free and calm your storm.
