God Give Us Men (Josiah Gilbert Holland)

Its been 365 days that the Chibok town lost over 200 school girls to the group called boko haram who kidnapped these girls from their school.

It is sad to note that a year after this sad incidence, we are still hoping and praying that the girls will be found and reunited with their various families.

At this solemn time that marks a sad day for the people of Chibok and Nigerians, even though elections into the various leadership position in the country has just been concluded, I will like to dedicate this poem by Josiah Gilbert Holland titled ‘God Give Us Men‘ that I learnt years back as a song while I was a secondary school student to the memory of this day.

GOD GIVE US MEN by Josiah Gilbert Holland

GOD, give us men!
A time like this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;
Men whom the lust of office does not kill;
Men whom the spoils of office can not buy;
Men who possess opinions and a will;
Men who have honor; men who will not lie;
Men who can stand before a demagogue
And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking!
Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog in public duty, and in private thinking;
For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds,
Their large professions and their little deeds,
Mingle in selfish strife, lo!
Freedom weeps,
Wrong rules the land and waiting Justice sleeps.
