The Narrow Gate

“Go in through the narrow gate, because the gate to hell is wide and the road that leads to it is easy, and there are many who travel it. But the gate to life is narrow and the way that leads to it is hard, and there are few people who find it. Matthew 7:13-14 (GNT)

If anyone has ever told you that being a Christian, a true believer and a follower of Christ is an easy task, then they probably lied to you.

Christianity is not a bed of roses, it is not a smooth and easy journey, neither is it a fairy tale. Rather, Christianity is a process of learning, loving and understanding life from the perspective of God while making conscious effort not to follow nor conform to the things of the flesh.

So many Christians want things to be smooth and as easy as possible. They want things to always go their way, they want the world to celebrate and accept them, they therefore engage in corrupt practices forgetting that in as much as we are a part of the composition called ‘world’, conforming to the standards of the world, then our Christianity or more still, Christ-like nature will be questioned.

The Bible says

“Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God—what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.” ~ Romans 12:2 (GNT)

This means that there is a world standard and there is a God standard. As a Christian, you are expected not to operate according to the world’s standard but you are expected to operate according to God’s standard by accepting and obeying God’s commandments. This will enable you view the world in a different way and ultimately transform the way you think, what you do and how you do it and by this, you will be able to understand what God really expect of you.

Remember, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak (Mark 14:38). This makes Christianity a constant battle between the spirit and the flesh.

Here, I believe the flesh can be said to be the world. In as much as your spirit desire a change and wants you to be a better man, the flesh which is the world shows you there is no need being a better man when you can join those around you in doing the wrongs they are doing and be ‘happy’.

They show you how easy it is to make money through corrupt practices, how to bypass laws and even appeal to your subconscious with messages such as “that is Apostle Paul’s opinion, you don’t have to follow it”.

The devil is a church goer and a bible ‘knower’. He knows the Bible so well that he tried tempting Jesus using the words in the Bible.

If the devil can tempt Jesus in all his glory, power and authority, how much more you? Do you think Jesus through grace want you to ignore some of the things in the Bible? Remember, it is written

“Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true.” Matthew 5:17 (GNT)

The good news here is that ‘sorrow may last for the night but joy comes in the morning’ (Psalm 30:5). That is why it is written in 1 Peter 5:10 (GNT) that;

“But after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who calls you to share his eternal glory in union with Christ, will himself perfect you and give you firmness, strength, and a sure foundation.”
