Selflessness or Selfishness?

The time will come when people will not listen to sound doctrine, but will follow their own desires and will collect for themselves more and more teachers who will tell them what they are itching to hear. They will turn away from listening to the truth and give their attention to legends. But you must keep control of yourself in all circumstances; endure suffering, do the work of a preacher of the Good News, and perform your whole duty as a servant of God. ~ 2 Timothy 4:3-5 (GNT)

The time is now upon us when people no longer listen to sound doctrines but they follow their minds, listen to teachers who rather than tell them what they need to hear, only tell them what they want to hear, rub their ego and make them feel good with themselves.

Attention is being given to legends, people want to know how they were able to achieve what they achieved and how they did it. People no longer give attention to the things that are noble, things that are true and things that are right, they just want to achieve what they refer to as success by any means possible, thereby doing all it takes which in turn leaves a gap in their heart and mind where the legends and teachers of fake doctrines can plant their seeds.

A Yoruba Proverbs says ‘if two kids from same parents come out of a room smiling, it means they didn’t tell themselves the truth’. In same light, if a preacher/ teacher leaves you happy with the way you are without challenging you to be a better person, watch it.

Yes! You might be tempted to say what they want to hear all cos you need what they have to give but you have to keep a tab on yourself, make conscious effort to always say the truth, teach the truth, tell people what they need to know rather than what they want to hear and remember that it is written in Proverbs 30:6 “If you claim that he said something that he never said, he will reprimand you and show that you are a liar.”

In the concluding part of the book of Revelation, John said;

“I, John, solemnly warn everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: if any add anything to them, God will add to their punishment the plagues described in this book. And if any take anything away from the prophetic words of this book, God will take away from them their share of the fruit of the tree of life and of the Holy City, which are described in this book. ~ Revelation 22:18-19 (GNT)

This is a warning and a message to everyone seeking to add to or remove from the world of God in order to achieve their own selfish desire, not minding if people are being lead astray.

Like I always say, it is your duty to open up your bible, read and understand all that is written in it so that when God’s word is being used in a way it was not designed for, you will know.

People get easily deceived due to their nature of ‘partial knowledge’. Knowing things on the surface makes you an easy prey for those who want to use it to deceive you. It is not enough for you to know that people do win lottery, you need to know what qualifies them for the win and how they get paid. If you do not know all these and you are hoping to one day win a lottery, you automatically become the ‘scammers choice’.

I like how the Message translation put 2 Timothy 4:3-5, it says;

You’re going to find that there will be times when people will have no stomach for solid teaching, but will fill up on spiritual junk food—catchy opinions that tickle their fancy. They’ll turn their backs on truth and chase mirages. But you —keep your eye on what you’re doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God’s servant. ~ 2 Timothy 4:3-5 (MSG)

Where do you stand?
Are you following the truth or chasing a mirage?

May the Lord open our eyes to see clearly that which is before us and understand fully all what we hear.
